Cocktails at Home: Daiquiris

Legend has it that in 1896 an American engineer ran out of gin while throwing a party in the town of Daiquiri, Cuba. When he improvised with a concoction of rum, the first modern daiquiri was created. It is likely this wasn’t the first time these ingredients had been fused together, however, since rum was commonly known as the “milk of Cuba.”
Because of the drink’s popularity, the engineer served it to some Americans who landed on the beach during the Spanish-American War. These men then took the concoction back to the States and introduced it to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C. The traditional daiquiri is made with sugar, lime, rum, and orange liquor, and is served straight up. Through the years, many variations have been added, and it is extremely popular to find frozen daiquiris around pools and vacation hot spots all over the world.
