Designing HOME Lifestyles Magazine is celebrating its fifth anniversary here in Pittsburgh. In light of this momentous occasion, we thought it would be fitting to go back and showcase some of the outstanding homes and builders we’ve featured over the years.

Here in western Pennsylvania, we’re fortunate to have some of the most talented and respected builders in the industry. The solid core of quality builders located in our region makes it a wonderful place to build the home of your dreams.

In each issue, we’ve focused on some of the area’s most amazing homes and the team who created them. We’ve had a wonderful experience working with these incredible builders and the people they partner with who turn dreams into reality.

Western Pennsylvania builders are some of the hardest working professional craftsman you will find anywhere. All of our featured contractors had a quality list of support companies that all worked in concert together to accomplish common goals, and the owners of the homes we have been allowed to photograph backed up their professionalism. Every owner commented about the high level of professionalism from not only the staff of the builders but also the support staff from other companies who assisted in the build-out of each home.

From the granite companies to the electricians, you could tell that the experienced contractors have been in this business so long that they only work with the best of the best. Some of the homes we’ve featured had some of the most interesting and quality woodwork you could find anywhere. From incredible wooden floors and trim, to paneling and box-beamed ceilings, the expert craftsmanship makes you simply stop and stare.

Many of the homes we’ve featured have also incorporated incredible wine cellars and custom stonework. As we’ve seen in a number of homes, the stonework, in particular, added incredible accents to the most unique areas of the home including some wonderful floor to ceiling fireplaces.

Anyone who’s familiar with western Pennsylvania knows that our area is also blessed with some incredible land on which to build a home. We often take the natural beauty of the land in our region for granted. When friends from other parts of the country visit our area for the first time, they are simply amazed by the land on which some of our homes are located. Our unique rolling hills and wooded landscape make the perfect setting for some incredible views and allow designers and architects to come up with some incredible dream-home layouts. Where else can you build a home with the type of incredible views we have in our region? Whether it be Mount Washington, the Laurel Highlands, Washington County, Butler County or any other spot in our region, you can definitely find exactly what you are looking for not only in the land but also in builders.

One of the most common threads throughout most of the homes we’ve covered is that the builders all seemed to be able to take a grand home and give it a cozy charm. All of the builders we featured used only the finest materials to give each home a warm, welcoming feel. For example, we’ve witnessed some of the most unusual yet beautiful marble and granite found on this earth in some of the homes. These types of quality materials create distinctiveness and charm that helps set these homes apart.

Over the years, we’ve also witnessed the close bond that our featured builders had with the families they worked with. These professionals were treated like family by the various homeowners, who welcomed us as well into their homes with open arms to take photos for the magazine. Throughout the process of each and every project, time and time again we were amazed with the intimate knowledge each had of each other’s families and lives. There was definitely more than a builder/buyer relationship; these families and builders became friends and created strong relationships that will last a lifetime.

Building a home is a very stressful experience, and those of you who have been through it know exactly what I’m talking about. To have spent so much time together with these families and to see the wonderful bond that grew between them and the builders was something we were so glad to have been a part of.
