Whole grains and products made by using whole grains are some of the most nutritionally beneficial foods that we can incorporate into our daily diets. This nutrient-rich category is so good for us because it contains the entire grain seed. Even if the grain has been processed (cracked, rolled, extruded, etc.) it will still bring basically the same amount of value as the original grain seed.
We all know that fruits and vegetables can provide us with plenty of vitamins and disease-fighting antioxidants; but what many of us do not realize is that whole grains provide many of the same nutrients. In some cases, whole grains are even better sources of these same vitamins and contain ones that fruits and veggies do not. Whole grains have always been known for their rich fiber benefit, but more and more they’re being recognized for the phytochemicals and antioxidants they offer. People who eat three servings a day have been shown to reduce their risk of heart disease, type II diabetes, and certain cancers. In addition, implementing whole grains in your diet can help you achieve a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) and provide a reduced risk of obesity.
But how do we know if something really contains true whole grains? There are a few key elements to look for when you’re at your local market. First, look at the ingredient list. If the food is made with whole grains, it will list one near the top
(i.e., whole grain wheat, oats or rice).
Second, some manufacturers are now adding the Whole Grains Council seal on their packing for a quick and easy way to make sure you are fueling your body properly.
Third, the government has put the following message on certain foods that meet the standard of top quality nutritional value:
“Diets rich in whole grain foods and plant foods, and low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risks of heart disease and some cancers.” If you see this statement on a product label, you can be certain you’re getting that oh-so-important whole grain goodness.
