kendall jackson wine bottle
Kendall Jackson –Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay 2007

For nearly three decades the Jackson Estates have been nurturing coveted vineyards along California’s cool coast. By controlling the vineyards and ensuring that preferred farming methods are used, Jackson Estates ensures that the grapes are handled with the utmost care and harvested at their peak performance for optimal ripeness.

This 100-percent Chardonnay is bursting with tropical flavors like pineapple, mango and papayas. Citrus notes explode in your mouth with a balanced flavor of baked apples and a hint of spiced nuts that round out the lingering finish. The layered aromas of green apples, peaches, honey, and vanilla are very pleasant.

To balance this intensity, Jackson Estates ages the wine in small oak barrels, primarily made with French oak sourced from the family’s stave mill in France.

ACCLAIM
90 Points – “The 2007 Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay is made entirely from estate fruit. This cuvee seems to get better with each vintage as winemaker Randy Ullom is a virtuoso at producing such high quantity/high quality wine. Notes of melons, honeysuckle, and lemon oil along with remarkable flavor and texture are found in this wine.”
—Robert M. Parker Jr., Wine Advocate, December 2008

88 Points – “Medium-light golden yellow; attractive, forward, slightly buttery, baked-apple aroma with lemony notes; medium-full to full body; forward, fleshy, green apple, and tropical fruit flavors with a touch of toasty oak and a pleasing mouthfeel.”
—Nicholas Ponomareff, California Grapevine, January 2009

87 Points/Best Buy – “Made in the familiar style that is K-J Vintner’s Reserve, this Chardonnay shows pineapple, lemondrop, mineral, and spice flavors balanced with crisp coastal acidity.”
—Steve Heimoff, Wine Enthusiast, February 2009
BONTERRA–Syrah 2006 wine bottle
BONTERRA–Syrah 2006

The warm summer days and the cool and foggy nights are ideal for creating this memorable Syrah. The result is one of Bonterra’s most acclaimed wines.

From Mendocino County comes a wonderful wine maintained through an organic growing process, from vineyards that are entering their prime. This is reflected in the wine’s brilliant color and intense aromas. Bonterra Syrah blends a touch of Rhone varietals like Granache, Mouvedre, and Viognier for a powerful floral note.

Concentrated berry flavors come to the fore, with notes of vanilla and toasty oak spice from the aging in French oak. The barrel aging in the handcrafted oak accentuates the distinctive plum and blackberry flavors in this robust yet smooth Syrah.

ACCLAIM
88 Points / Very Good – “This is Bonterra’s best Syrah in many years. It’s not an ageable blockbuster, built along Northern Rhône lines, but it’s a gentle, soft wine for immediate enjoyment. It has earthy flavors of cherries, red currants, cola and smoky vanilla, and finishes clean.”
—Steve Heimoff, Wine Enthusiast, May 2008
BERINGER -Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 wine bottle
BERINGER -Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

The vineyards are located 17 miles northwest of the historic Beringer winery. In the Knights Valley there is no town, spa, or restaurants, just vineyards rooted in shallow, alluvial soils full of volcanic rock, which gives the wines grown here their distinctive character.

The Knights Valley designation was first used on a Beringer label in 1974. By 1983, this area had won official recognition as a premier wine-growing region in the form of its own American Viticulture Area (AVA) designation.

The 2006 Knights Valley has a vibrant fruit core, hints of brown spice and pink peppercorns, and a lingering finish of ripe black fruit. It’s an appealing wine, showing likeable softness and flashy flavors. The palate brings cassis, mocha, licorice, sweet tobacco, sage, Asian spice, and smoky oak, and it finishes long and rich.

This wine is notable for its superb structure and affordable price.

ACCLAIM
87 Points – “The dark ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Knight’s Valley exhibits aromas of sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, chocolate, earth, and subtle smoky oak, medium to full body, and a seductive, round, silky texture. Enjoy it over the next decade.”
—Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, December 2008
J. Lohr Estates – Riverstone Chardonnay 2007 wine bottle
J. Lohr Estates – Riverstone Chardonnay 2007

The vintage of 2007 saw very cool temperatures during flowering, resulting in a phenomenon called “hens and chicks” in this Chardonnay. This is a cluster with normal size berries ( “hens”) mixed with tiny (seedless or unfertilized) berries (“chicks”). Although the clusters weigh less, the flavors are intensified in the tiny berries. Furthermore, the combination of very little rain in 2007 and mild weather throughout the vintage produced some truly excellent Chardonnay that’s rich in texture and full of stone fruit flavors.

The vines are grown primarily on Elder loam soils underlain by river stones deposited over thousands of years from the Arroyo Seco River, allowing a four-foot rooting zone that keeps the vines’ vegetative growth and fruit in balance. Additionally, the cool climate and winds of the Salinas Valley extend the growing season and retain the natural grape acids and intense varietal character of the Chardonnay.

This Chardonnay has a very attractive straw yellow color of moderate depth. The aromas are of lime zest, pear, nectarine, and bubble gum, combined with the perfumed honey and toasty vanilla oak bouquet from the barrel fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and sur lie aging. The result is an elegant Chardonnay from Monterey’s

Arroyo Seco AVA. The flavors are clean, with nectarine, citrus, subtle floral notes, and vanilla toastiness, producing layers of complexity with an excellent balance of fresh fruit acidity and palate weight. This wine is ideal for pairing with oven-roasted chicken, Dungeness crab or cream-sauced pasta dishes.
