SPRING 2011   Pittsburgh's Best Resource for Home Design and Lifestyle Needs.

Pittsburgh is the place many of our readers call home. Because of this, many of us fail to appreciate everything that our fair city has to offer. When visiting Pittsburgh for the first time, however, people are always amazed by the beauty of the view from Mt. Washington, which showcases the three rivers that surround our incredible city. This unique confluence of rivers is just one of the many great aspects of this wonderful city that we often take for granted.

Thanks to our rivers, Pittsburgh was given the honor of hosting the 35th Bassmaster Classic in 2005. Our rivers are not just good for fishing, however; they are also ideal for kayaking, canoeing, sculling and, of course, boating. Watching the sculling on the river in the early hours of the weekend is a peaceful and enjoyable site. They seem to cut through the river so effortlessly. It’s just one of the many wonderful water activities that Pittsburgh has to offer.

Pittsburgh actually has the second largest number of registered pleasure boats in the country. In Allegheny County there are 17 marinas along the three rivers that offer river access, including many that also offer dining opportunities and boat maintenance.

If you are a boat enthusiast you don’t have to be convinced to get out there and experience our waters. Best of all, you not only have the three rivers, you also have various lakes, streams and reservoirs as well.

Check out the places we’ve listed here to give you some ideas on how to get started in boating in Pittsburgh:

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission
www.fish.state.pa.us
Click on “Boat” on the left-hand navigational bar and you’ll find and incredible resource for boating in Pennsylvania. From there you can search by county for information on water activities. For example, if you click on “Pennsylvania Lakes,” it will show you all of Pennsylvania’s lakes, county by county. It also lists boat access areas and provides information on marinas.

Boat Owners Association of the United States
www.boatus.com
This association is an advocate for boaters’ rights on local and national laws and regulations. It is also a provider of many benefits and services, including marine insurance, a large towing network and a 40,000-product catalog.

Discover Boating Program
www.discoverboating.com
The Discover Boating Program is designed to help first-time boat buyers determine which boat is right for them. The Discover Boating Program is managed by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (a not-for-profit trade association representing recreational boating) and has many useful resources available to the public free of charge.
