Cocktails at Home: Sangria

Spanish sangria is said to have first made its appearance in the U.S. at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. It is basically a red wine punch with fruit, served over ice.

Some will tell you to use the cheapest bottle of wine when you’re making sangria. My advice is the same that I give for cooking: Don’t use anything that you wouldn’t drink. Have fun with sangria. Experiment with your favorite wine and fruit. It is one of my favorite things to make because there are no rules. You can even use your favorite white wine as a base to make “Sangria Blanco.”

Make sure you give your sangria plenty of time to soak in all of the flavors of the fruit, and let it chill overnight, at the very least. Enjoy!

DHL’s “Soon to be Famous” Sangria

1.5 Liter bottle of Red Wine (Not the best, but something you’d drink)
1/4 cup Meyers Run
1/4 cup Cointreau
1/4 cup Grand Mariner
1/2 cup Sugar
1 Lemon
1 Lime
1 Orange
1 Apple
1 Peach
1 Pear
1 dozen Cherries (seeds removed)

  1. Cut the lemon, lime and orange into slices. Cut the rest of the fruit in small dice.
  2. In a separate pitcher mix the wine, sugar, rum, Cointreau and Grand Mariner well.
  3. In your final pitcher, layer the fruit on the bottom and pour the liquid mixture on top of the fruit.
  4. Let refrigerate at least overnight so the flavors of the fruit can be fully incorporated.
  5. Just before service, pour the SoBe into the sangria and stir well.
  6. For service, pour sangria over ice. Use a wooden spoon to hold back the larger slices of fruit.
  7. Add a few pieces of the pear, apple, cherries and strawberries as your garnish.
