SPRING LIFESTYLES: GOIN’ FISHIN’

Those of us who call Western Pennsylvania home sometimes forget how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place. Pennsylvania is home to more than 83,000 miles of streams and rivers. We also have over 4,000 inland lakes and ponds covering 160,000 acres. And don’t forget there’s another 470,000 acres of water a little north of us called Lake Erie. All of these wonderful water resources make Pennsylvania a great place for fishing.

Many people never try fishing because they don’t know where to start. They figure they don’t know enough about fishing and they’d rather not embarrass themselves. Well, contrary to what you may think, fishing is something anyone can do. Learning how to fish is half the fun. Truth is, you can easily find a shore within a short drive from just about anywhere in Western PA, and chances are you can find a place where no one else will be.

Fishing is a simple, wonderful way for a parent and a child to spend some quality time together. As with anything else, however, it’s important to do research first. At the end of this article you’ll find a list of links that will give you all of the basic information you will need to get started: what to buy (rods, reels and bait), where to go (you’ll find hundreds of spots close to home), when to go (optimal times to fish) and what to do (the rules required by law).

In Pennsylvania, if you are 16 years of age or older, you must have a license to fish and you must have it clearly displayed at all times when fishing. A fishing license can be purchased at most places that sell fishing equipment or online at the PA Fish and Boat Commission’s website (www.fish.state.pa.us). The cost is $22 for those 16-64 and $11 for those 65 and older.

April 14th, the opening day of both trout and salmon fishing in Pennsylvania, is heralded by those who love to fish as a national holiday. If you’d like to join in on the fun, just go out and locate a trout-stocked body of water. Around here, they’re easy to find. All you’ll need is a basic rod, reel, a cup of mealworms or nightcrawlers. Chances are you’ll catch something. The worst case scenario is you and your child will spend some quality time together. Just a few words of advice: leave the cell phones, GameBoys and iPods at home. Just enjoy the natural beauty without all the modern distractions. You will, however, want to bring along some sunscreen and insect repellent.

Have a great time fishing with your kids!

These three links will give you some great information and lead you to other sites to help you learn more about fishing in Pennsylvania.
