The Ultimate Margarita

Due to the growing popularity of tequila in the past fifty years, the Margarita has become one of today's most fashionable cocktails. However, like so many other famous cocktails, its history remains shrouded in mystery.

There are countless fascinating stories regarding the origin of the Margarita. One such tale includes that of a showgirl from the late 1940's named Marjorie King. Marjorie met a gentleman by the name of Danny Herrera, owner of Rosarita Beach's Rancho La Gloria Bar near Tijuana. Herrera discovered that Marjorie was allergic to every form of alcohol with the exception of tequila. Dazzled by this faithful customer, Herrera experimented with numerous tequila-based concoctions until he found one that Marjorie liked. Her preferred mixture of choice consisted of 3 parts tequila, 2 parts Cointreau and 1 part fresh lemon juice. The ingredients were shaken together with shaved ice and then served in a short-stemmed glass rimmed with lemon juice and salt.

In honor of its inspiration, the drink was given the Spanish name for Marjorie. Herrera's "Margarita" is said to be the first of many that followed.

There's no doubt a number stories surround the Margarita's origin, but this one seems to be the most intriguing. Regardless of its roots, the Margarita is a drink that screams celebration. To make a drink is simple and to make a Margarita is an event!

So go ahead and pull out your favorite tequila, mixes, salt, limes, shaker and some glasses, add a smile and shake up a little excitement!
